Geotechnical engineering - mining

Role Model(s)

Mining engineers deal with the safe and economic extraction, processing and marketing of mineral resources from the earth.

Mining engineers are involved in:

  • Evaluating potential mine sites.
  • Determining what kind of heavy equipment is needed for ore extraction.
  • Overseeing the construction of mines.
In your community:

Mines can bring great wealth and prosperity to a community, unfortunately old abandoned mines can also pollute land and ground water. If your community is near old mining operations, your knowledge of mining engineering could help ensure that area hunting and fishing grounds, as well as local drinking water remain clean and safe.
